METHODS is an acronym that stands for Mississippi Empowerment Through Hope Opportunity Development and Service. The primary goal is to unlock the potential of the people of Mississippi to build and sustain healthy communities. The specific purpose is to provide community awareness and education
Problem Overview
Methamphetamine is the fastest growing drug threat in Mississippi due to increasing availability, the rapid growth of abuse, the threat to human life, and the threat to the environment.
Goals
The goal of METHODS is to significantly reduce the prevalence of first-time methamphetamine use in Greenville. To achieve this goal, we are active in three areas:
- Public Service Messaging
- Public Policy
- Community Action
Background
Through focus groups, surveys, interviews and community action programs METHODS will attempt to capture the thoughts and feelings about meth from the citizens of Greenville.
Community Action Program
METHODS is a comprehensive and inclusive drug awareness prevention programs that addresses individual risks for abusing drugs; include family, school, and community prevention efforts. The program is aimed at preventing first time use. Family, school, and community elements will be incorporated to maximize prevention campaign effectiveness.
Objectives of the Project
The following are the objectives of this project:
- to gauge the knowledge base of general meth information from the city of Greenville’s youth & adults representing various community sectors;
- to obtain feedback from youth and adults on the impact of meth in urban communities;
- to examine community and cultural strengths to address meth; and
- to solicit media message ideas for the meth awareness campaign
